Ways to improve writing! The article appeared in “India Today” magazine this week. It was written by Roshni Chakrabarty. The title is “9 Ways To Improve Your Writing Skills”. According to the article, strong writing skills are crucial for academic success. It highlights the fact that these 9 practical tips will help students, educators, and researchers towards effective “communication, clarity, and persuasion”.  The writer, then, enumerates and explains the nine strategies as follows:

9 Strategies:

1. Read as much as you can. Regular and sustained reading does help broaden the writing horizons of students and professionals

2. Have a good mastery of English grammar. For example, tenses, sentence structure, and punctuation will make written products much clearer and more coherent.

3. As the saying goes, we all ‘learn by doing’. So, the more you engage in a skill, the better you become at it. Writing is no exception.

4. Familiarize oneself with academic writing etiquette, including citation styles.

5. Following brainstorming, usually comes the phase of organizing ideas and thoughts into coherent headings, topic sentences, and coherent paragraphs.

6. It would be a good idea also if one could proceed to editing and proofreading. This is the phase when you need to check if the written product does not include any errors relating to grammar, spelling, punctuation, or language accuracy in general. One may make use of an appropriate checklist for this purpose.

7. One could look for writing assistance from instructors, or from attending face-to-face workshops, or check resources, available in hard copy or online.

8. Once you finish with ideas, it’s now time for exchanging the written products with peers or friends so as to get feedback on how to improve one’s writing, that is getting a second reader’s perspective. A special checklist or grid would be also recommended at this stage.

Final Tip:

9. Finally remember that just like other language skills, acquiring a good level of competence in writing requires a lot of practice and perseverance. But in the end of the ‘learning ‘journey’, one will realize that it is worth all the efforts invested, time, and patience!
